A city of neighborhoods, Jersey City treasures its thirteen different neighborhood shopping districts, which offer many exciting shops and boutiques. Thousands of retail shops of all types offer endless entertainment opportunities. People are drawn to Jersey City because of the wide variety of shops and the reduced sales tax available in over 80% of retail establishments. The 3% sales tax is almost 1/3 of the sales tax in NYC. Jersey City also contains two fine malls, the Hudson and Newport, located minutes from the NJ Turnpike and the Holland Tunnel.

Walk down one of the many intimate shopping districts in one of Jersey City's neighborhoods and you'll be able to:

Smell fresh bread being baked in an Italian bakery's brick oven or chicken being barbecued in a Caribbean restaurant, Hear shopkeepers speaking to customers in Russian, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese or in a West Indian patois, Taste the curry along the row of shops and restaurants in "India Square" on Newark Avenue and try on a sari, or See the handiwork of artists in galleries throughout the city. These neighborhood shopping districts have continued to foster specialized service and shopping areas for the many local residents and visitors.

Newport Mall, a modern, vibrant, enclosed retail center features many national chains, including JC Penny's, Sears, Sterns, and Filene's Basement. The one-million square-foot regional mall is the first of such size in Hudson County. Hudson Mall is a dynamic retail center which has long been a favorite place to spend leisure time shopping, eating or going to the movies. Both malls are in "Urban Enterprise Zones," reducing the state sales tax on all purchases from 6% to 3%.
